Stretch marks, also known as striae, have been the cause of embarrassment for some women that have suddenly gained weight. This is quite common amongst pregnant women and those who are going through puberty, obesity or weight gain from muscle building. These form once the dermis, or the middle layer of skin is stretched farther than it can allow. The connective fibers in the skin will break and inhibit the production of collagen, thereby leading to scars. The scars can be treated via stretchmark removal surgery or a number of products.
Who are the Candidates?
Women who have lost a lot of weight from surgery or sudden weight loss programs and those who have been through a pregnancy can develop stretch marks, then becoming candidates for stretchmark removal surgery. Stretch marks are very common on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, hips, arms and lower back. You should first consult a dermatologist regarding the degree of your stretchmarks, how long these have been present and what are the best treatments to hide them or remove them permanently.
On Natural Removal Methods
Natural stretch mark removal techniques will include lotions, creams and ointments, together with a number of diet and exercise strategies to repair the skin. Although these are usually more affordable compared to invasive procedures, these also tend to be less effective in removing the scars for good. Some natural products usually fade the scars a bit or conceal them, but do not take out the marks fully.
On Laser Treatment
Laser stretch mark removal is described as a medical procedure wherein a laser surgically takes out areas of the skin that is affected by the stretch marks. The stretch skin has to be months old first or defined as “old”. This will be removed and new fresh skin will be grown to take its place. In several circumstances, it will require a number of sessions before stretch marks can be removed completely. The procedure is also very effective and safe, with little or zero side effects. The side effects, if present, are also only minor and temporary.
A beam will be used to treat the old skin and replace it with the new. This will involve a number of thin skin layers until the scar is removed. This is a painless procedure, although you might feel some mild heat or discomfort in the area. The treatment will be done over 2 to 6 sessions. Each session can cost around $400 to $1500 depending on the severity. Some patients experience blistering or changing of color on the site, although these are very rare and can still be alleviated over time.
Surgical Treatment
Stretchmark removal surgery is very common and considered by experts to be very effective. This will involve taking out the areas of stretched skin. During a tummy tuck, the skin below the belly button will be removed. This is usually the area wherein the stretch marks are very obvious. These methods are very effective, although it is also more invasive and will need longer for patients to fully recover.
